Morocco has two deserts worth experiencing: the dramatic rocky plateau of Agafay (40 minutes from Marrakech) and the legendary golden dunes of the Sahara (Erg Chebbi). Whether you have a day or a week, we have a desert experience for you.
What is the difference between Agafay and the Sahara Desert?
Agafay is a rocky, semi-arid moonscape 40 minutes from Marrakech — not sandy dunes, but dramatic and beautiful with Atlas Mountain views. The Sahara (specifically Erg Chebbi near Merzouga) has the classic golden sand dunes, but requires a multi-day trip (minimum 2 nights) from Marrakech.
Are camel rides included in desert tours?
Yes — camel rides are included in all our Agafay and Sahara tours. In Agafay, a 30-minute camel ride is included in the day trip. In the Sahara, the sunset camel ride to the desert camp and the morning return are both included in multi-day packages.
What should I expect sleeping in a desert camp?
Our Sahara camp is a proper luxury experience — not rough camping. You sleep in a private furnished tent with a proper bed, clean sheets, and en-suite facilities (hot shower, flush toilet). There is solar electricity for charging phones. The experience is intimate (maximum 12 guests) with a real campfire, traditional Berber dinner, and live music.
How cold does the desert get at night?
Even in summer, Saharan nights drop to 10–15°C. In winter (December–February), temperatures can fall below 0°C. We provide warm blankets at the camp, but we recommend bringing a warm layer or sleeping bag liner in winter. The Agafay Desert is slightly milder — typically 15–20°C at night.
Is the desert suitable for children and elderly visitors?
The Agafay Desert day trip is excellent for families with children from age 4 upward. The Sahara multi-day tour is suitable for children aged 6+ and most elderly travellers with reasonable mobility. We use comfortable 4x4 vehicles and can adapt the pace for any group.
